IMPLANT REMOVAL - WRIST
Wrist Implant Removal Surgery
Implant removal is a surgical procedure performed to remove previously inserted plates, screws, pins or other fixation implants from the wrist after the underlying fracture or injury has healed. In selected patients, removal may be considered when the implant causes irritation, prominence, restricted movement, pain, tendon irritation or other implant-related problems. In some cases, removal may also be advised when the implant is no longer required, depending on the type of fixation and clinical circumstances.
At Dr. Harish Madrekar’s Orthopaedic Clinic, the wrist is carefully evaluated before implant removal. Clinical examination and appropriate X-rays are performed to confirm fracture healing, implant position and bone integrity. The timing of removal is individualized based on the original injury, fracture healing, implant type and the patient's symptoms.
Implant removal is not routinely necessary for every patient after fracture fixation. The decision is made after considering the benefits, risks and individual clinical requirements.
If you have a previously operated wrist with a plate or screws and are experiencing pain, implant prominence, tendon irritation, stiffness or discomfort, an orthopaedic assessment can help determine whether implant removal is appropriate.
