Rolando Fractur -intra-articular fracture at the base of the first metacarpal
Rolando Fracture Surgery
A Rolando fracture is a complex, intra-articular fracture at the base of the first metacarpal involving the thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint. It is typically a comminuted fracture and can result in joint incongruity, instability, pain and reduced thumb function if not appropriately treated.
At Dr. Harish Madrekar’s Orthopaedic Clinic, Rolando fractures are evaluated with detailed clinical examination and appropriate X-ray imaging, with CT scan considered in complex or highly comminuted fractures to assess the fracture pattern and joint involvement.
Treatment is planned according to the degree of displacement, comminution, joint incongruity, instability and functional requirements of the patient.
The primary goals of surgery are to restore joint congruity, maintain metacarpal alignment, provide stable fixation and facilitate early functional rehabilitation while minimizing the risk of post-traumatic arthritis and loss of thumb function.
